Like your beloved ripped jeans, distressed furniture, too, is intentionally given the worn-out feel, to convey that it may have been around for generations. Techniques like light sanding or hammering help in getting a faux-aged surface and is a clever way to amp your not-so-new and pretty furniture. Also known as shabby chic, here are some ‘weathered look’ ideas that can add loads of character to any space.

1. Something old, something new
This sliding door has simulated marks of rusting and wear, yet it looks anything but slipshod in this very contemporary space. The doors to imitate metal here – old, rusty metal with traces of blue paint. The distressed blue bench and metal-studded wooden partition give a flow of continuity to the weathered look that softens the cool precision of the mainly modern decor. The space shows how aged, rough materials add another visual dimension to any space and bring echoes of an older, harsher world to a modern space of ease and elegance.

The aged theme continues along the staircase, balustrades and distressed handrails, embracing a bit of industrial style, too.

2. Cosy country home
Distressed furniture pieces are dotted about this room – a modern-day take on shabby chic, French country style. The vintage table, scratched folding chair and worn-out statement pieces placed against the wall break the monotony of white-skirted sofas. An added a pop of colour comes from the aqua bottles and lavender flowers.

3. Rustic, battered and very smart
A weathered sofa with a mesh back and reclaimed wood tables give a rustic vibe to this quaint seating area. The dents on the table surface, which also has a few wormholes, add to the aged-wood look.

4. A hint as statement
The metal chairs with a distressed polish in a charming shade of blue give an unconventional touch to this living room. Without being in you face, it says that flawed can be gorgeous, too.

5. Old is beautiful
A worn-looking vanity and a weathered rocking chair dress up this corner. The exposed layers of paint on these two pieces are subtly matched to create a cohesive look. I love how the vibrant digital-print cushion adds a dash of colour here.

6. Practical and stylish
This wooden floor is made of white-lacquered oak and is intentionally given an aged and worn treatment. It’s an ingenious alternative to polished hardwood floors and you don’t have to worry about scrapes and marks!

7. Repurposed is sexy
The packing-chest-inspired coffee tables are the show-stealers of this living room. The classic combination of old wood with raw metal seems perfect to serve up tea and biscuits, and store your ‘treasures’ as well. Even the stools and side table are distressed – a clever idea to repurpose leftover wood from construction or elsewhere.

8. Distressed industrial
Here, the open metal console with pullout drawers blends the weathered and industrial style. The table surface is laminated while the base, drawers and supporting legs are given a smudged paint treatment. Grouped with the antique wall clock, exposed bricks and metal artefacts, the decor sings distressed!

9. Old-world daintiness
This pink bathroom vanity is so sophisticated. The pullout drawers with antique metal handles and distressed pink polish make it the piece de resistance of the bathroom corner.

10. One strong statement
The interesting texture and quirky colour of this weathered-wood bathroom vanity is enough to allow the rest of the design to be minimal and understated. A great way to style your existing furniture.
