A Stylish and Functional Home Office for 2
See how a designer transforms this Toronto home office with artistic wall storage, custom desks and bold wallpaper
A custom built-in shelving unit in the office runs the length of the back wall. The unit is made of blue and white melamine and features two sliding doors that can move left or right. The doors are covered in printed acrylic panels featuring an image of the Galleria Umberto in Naples, Italy. The panels are attached to the two sliding doors and a central panel with Velcro, allowing the homeowners to potentially change up the images or reuse them if they decide to move.
When the sliding doors are open to the edges of the wall, white interior shelves are revealed. These center shelves are used to store binders and other office supplies.
The custom desk frames are made of melamine, with spray-painted MDF for the sliding drawers. The homeowners selected a pair of ergonomic desk chairs with light blue cushions to complement the custom blue paint from Benjamin Moore that covers some of the wall unit shelves and the ceiling trim. The ceiling wallpaper also features a graphic blue-and-white design. “The homeowners love blue, so I tried to work it in where I could,” Perov says.

The custom desks features a center peninsula that provides separation between the two seating areas and also a spot where the homeowners can collaborate. “They can turn their desk chairs towards each other and work on stuff together,” Perov says. “It’s also a spot where their kids can come over and share their homework with them.”

Home Office at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple and their two kids
Location: Toronto
Size: About 120 square feet (11 square meters)
Designer: Alona Perov of MAJ Interiors
These Toronto homeowners regularly work from home, and sharing their previous home office, which was designed as a solo workspace, had become a constant struggle. The old space featured one desk and some shabby built-ins, which left the couple competing for space.
“In the past they would have to kick each other out of the office if they really wanted to get any work done,” says designer Alona Perov, who was brought in to transform the home office into a stylish and functional workspace for two.
The homeowners enter the first-floor home office through a set of French doors. To create a sense of privacy, Perov replaced the former clear glass windows in the doors with frosted glass. “The frosted glass adds privacy but still filters in some light,” she says.
