Exposed wooden beam ceilings flip the traditional practice of concealing the architecture of the ceiling on its head. Instead of concealing the elements of the roof or ceiling construction, the ‘bones’ are revealed and displayed as design elements. In terms of decor, exposed wooden beams can add oodles of character to a space, not to mention the warmth and earthiness they bring to an interior. Here, we look at different spaces and how the decor of each area interacts with wooden ceiling beams.
1. A way to enhance the height of a room and make a person take notice of the room’s design in its entirety (from ceiling to floor) is by having an impactful ceiling design, as it helps the eyes to travel along the entire length and breath of a room. Consider a design with high contrast between the exposed wooden ceiling beams and the ceiling for an immediate and bold visual impact.

2. Wooden ceiling beams can add warmth and a touch of colour to the decor of a light and bright room finished in muted hues. Plus, a dark ceiling paint that mirrors the colour of the wood helps add depth to the scheme.

Tip: If you have high ceilings and you crave a rustic, lived-in look, you can choose to install faux wood beams. These are designed to look like real wood in look, size, and texture, and are also available in varied colours, patterns and grain.

3. A heavily beamed wooden ceiling, paired with softly moulded stained plaster walls helps create a natural, earthy feel that is hard to miss. The simple, straight architectural lines lend an understated sense of balance and peace to the room’s decor.

Tip: Sometimes even tiny spaces can benefit from exposed beams. If a room has light colours and smooth finishes that give the space the illusion of being very large, then the overheard beams won’t seem too bulky and overbearing.

4. Box beam ceilings add movement to the space, as these line up with the frame of the element below – such as a bed, a door or a table. It makes the eye follow the beams running along the width of the ceiling and continue on, down to the floor. Also, ceiling beams help create a getaway vibe, reminiscent of traditional palaces and fort rooms.

5. Wooden beams, when complemented with brown, earthy hues (the wooden flooring, brown bedding and light wooden ladder, in this picture) help create an outdoor vibe.

6. A bathroom can be enhanced with architectural elements to make it eye-catching. In this space, a special niche is created in the ceiling to fit wooden beams in a grid-like format that adds depth and height to the space.

Tip: For wooden beam ceiling ideas, don’t always stick to a linear format – the joints of the beams can be connected to each other (like in this image) to create a varied designs.

7. In this minimally designed space, the wooden elements take centre stage. The wooden beam ceilings complement the wood columns and the furniture, and look striking against the neutral stone flooring.

8. I feel this vaulted white ceiling might have looked a little too cavernous without the row of beams to visually break things up. The wooden slats also provide a warming contrast to the modern white-and-blue theme of the bedroom’s shell. The same wooden accents are taken up by the furniture and panelling by the windows, tying the room together.

Tip: Triangularly arranged beams clearly define the shape of a pitched roof while they give it structural sturdiness. They also add cosiness to the space and just the right amount of rusticity.

9. Sometimes, apart from adding charm to the ceiling, wooden beams also help lower the height of tall ceilings, like in this case. The dominating wooden beams form an architectural feature here and add warmth to the entire scheme.
