The fifth wall – the ceiling – can beautifully transform the ambience of a room, giving it a unique personality. There are myriad designs (such as tray, beam, cove, false and drop ceilings) and materials you can choose from. However, you can take your ceiling design to dramatic heights by opting for a wooden ceiling. This will give a simple and yet sophisticated flair to the room and provide an intriguing material contrast to the rest of the space. Here are six great wooden ceiling designs for inspiration…
Aamir and Hameeda Associates
1. The pitched wooden ceiling with exposed beams and rafters lends this bare bedroom a country-style vibe, teamed with bedside lamps, tall windows reminiscent of early Portuguese architecture in Goa, solitary canvas art and wooden flooring. By using wood and other natural materials, architects Aamir and Hameeda have managed to make the room look rustic, with a delightful sense of warmth.

Monica Khanna Designs
2. The wooden ceiling with exposed beams steals the show in this spacious and sophisticated living room in a farmhouse designed by Monica Khanna. The ceiling has been well balanced with the use of an ornate wooden fan and woody pendant lights. Also, by laying out a wooden flooring, the architect has ensured that the warmth from the top flows down to the entire room. The subtly coloured upholstery, teamed with the view of the outdoors and the wooden ceiling, gives an earthy dimension to the room – it doesn’t need to be over-accessorised because of that.
Shabnam Gupta
3. In this room by the Orange Lane, a dark-brown stained wooden corrugated sheet ceiling forms the focus of the room. The ceiling, white walls, blue-tiled flooring, upholstered ikat headboard, hanging lamps, white bed and distressed trunk come together to create a lovely harmony.

Studio Course
4. Conceived by Studio Course, the interior of this house is a vision in matte wood, since the owners didn’t want even a hint of gloss lamination around their house. The matte ceiling runs throughout the house and is in sync with the dining table made of a rough-cut, unstraightened wooden slab. The use of subtle hues helps draw all the attention to the gorgeous ceiling.
Studio Hu’māne
5. With its recessed square panels, a timber coffered ceiling with its distinctive grid-like framework emerges as a focal point in this retreat designed by Studio Hu’māne. The wooden panelling, minimal classic cane furniture, the vibrant carpet and the painting together conjure up a traditional setting.

Appealing ceiling: Warm it up with wood
6. Are you a fan of distressing? Then, this high-vaulted ceiling is perfect to suit your design sense and sensibilities. Conceived and executed by R. Goodwin Design, the dining room of the French-style hunting lodge has been given a classic time-worn look with the unrefined distressed ceiling and half-columns, which perfectly complement the solid-wood dining table, pretty armchairs and cushions, mounted antlers, reclaimed wood-framed mirror, vintage hand-painted botanical wall tiles.
