Statement wallpapers, bright paints, art and curios aside, another element that can liven up interior spaces is decorative tiles. These can showcase eclectic patterns, motifs and bright colours and can act as focal points in any home. Here are some examples that impress.
Fadd Studio
1. Diagonally set, patterned vintage tiles lend visual depth and oodles of style to this kitchen area. The soft colours of the flooring complement the old rosewood Chettinad dining table, distressed side table, pastel chairs and white-painted doors and columns. I like how a hint of contrast is brought in by two dark-shaded lights over the dining table.

2. Add a potent shot of design to the humble backyard or a tiny patio with patterned tiles. All you need to do is a little bit of groundwork! See how these tiles lend colour to the rustic, woody place. Also, the chevron zig-zag pattern adds a sense of movement to the design and the long horizontal lines of black and white create an illusion of extended space.

Tip: For patios, balconies and courtyards, make sure you choose tiles that are suited for outdoor conditions. While some tiles may look gorgeous, they might not be able to withstand constant rains or extremely hot climates and could break or crack.

3. This inner courtyard looks stunning with the use of tiles with traditional motifs on them. These patterns go well with the other traditional elements in the space like the long wooden seat, ethnic-style lanterns and a tree situated in a courtyard-like spot, reminiscent of many old Indian homes.

4. Sometimes bright and beautiful tiles can make the use of a rug optional. This patterned square made of yellow Jaisalmer stone, red sandstone, white marble and black kadappa stone adds such a vibrant touch to the living room.

5. This Hyderabad apartment’s entrance lobby is defined by the choice sleek furniture and, of course, the floor-to-wall multi-patterned, multicoloured Spanish tiles. The tiles extend to the floor to demarcate the seating zone in front of the wall and the dining space behind it.

6. Look at this ensuite with colourfully patterned wall tiles that contrast perfectly with the dark-grey floor and wooden vanity. The vibrant, repetitive motifs make a statement and give this bathroom so much personality.

7. Patchwork-style splashback tiles in warm colours create a rich backdrop in this neutral kitchen. These beauties immediately catch our attention and lend a fun quality to the kitchen.

Tip: Do use the appropriate splashback tiles directly behind the stove. The variations in temperature between when the stove is on and when it’s off may cause some tiles to expand and contract and get visible cracks. Carrara stone, glazed ceramics, stainless steel and wood-finish tiles are some options.
