7 Spaces That Shine Because of the Colour Grey
Add depth, character and high style to your home with this mesmerising shade
For many of us, the default go-to colour for our walls is white. What if we tell you that there’s a new ‘white’ in town, which is as neutral a shade, yet more fashionable, subtly sexy and sometimes even bold? Say hello to grey! It’s a great alternative to white, with its muted and sophisticated feel. Gone are days when grey was associated with being dull and boring; we show you spaces that shine bright because of the use of this colour.
Resembling all the shades of grey in an overcast sky, the snug bedroom with stunning ikkat bedding and concrete walls has all the trappings of an enticing home. The dull yellow trunk at the foot of the distressed-finish bed and the red side table make it an apt place for those who love minimalist interiors. Even though the room is a tad small, the use of grey gives it a very well-ventilated and illuminated feel.

This balcony designed by Aamir & Hameeda Associates is a perfect example of a shabby-chic space where all its elements come together with the prominent rustic and raw grey wall. Without using the somewhat predictable elements of a balcony, such as mirrors, wicker furniture or lots of potted plants, the designer has used unusual accents like ceramic animal heads, spotlights, Goan-style grey-and-blue floor tiles, a black hookah, a tripod-legged table fan and a distressed-finish table set to make a uniquely edgy but welcoming space.
A dining area designed by Spaces Architects@ka has been beautifully transformed into a gorgeous grey space dominated by the ‘light and grey’ geometric wall design to the left, while an origami mural gives delicate emphasis to the pale grey wall. The soft greys of the room are crisply punctuated by the wall niches, the vintage Jason Miller pendant chandelier and the rideau-brown dining set. The round piece of kitsch art punches a cheery hole in the quietness of the space. The browns of the wooden false ceilings add warmth to the room and give it a modern-meets-classic feel.
What a pleasure to use a bathroom that’s a meditative space. Like the one in the picture, with its earthy grey setting, concrete floor, stone washbasin and sun-soaked bathing area. The rectangle mirror that reflects the family photos in the background and the mystical black canvas add more drama to the bathroom. This space, designed by Dipen Gada & Associates, is a testament to how exposed cement is as sophisticated a material as they come.
