This homeowner’s No. 1 wish was to have a big island that would serve as a work and gathering area in her kitchen. In addition, she was looking to update the style and make the kitchen light and bright.
This kitchen features some of the most popular choices among homeowners renovating their kitchens: white cabinets and countertop, wood floors, gray cabinets (on the island) and multicolored backsplash.Since survey respondents had completed a kitchen project in the previous 12 months, were working on one or planned to start one in the next three months, their responses provide a window on what’s trending in American kitchens now. Lighting. “We wanted some feature lighting, so we hung shallow chandeliers in the open space overhead and reduced the size of the trim around the kitchen windows so we could add sconces there,” Nelson says. “We wanted to get a little jewelry up there,” she says, referring to the brass and glass sconces.Materials palette. To forge connections between spaces within an open floor plan, Nelson recommends repeating textures. Here the wood beams over the sitting area and family room tie into the wood countertop on the island. She used the same wall and trim paint colors in both spaces. Oil and utensil pullouts. In another example of well-designed cabinetry, narrow pullout cabinets on both sides of the range offer space for frequently used cooking oils, as well as utensils — a nice convenience for a frequent cook. Roll-out pantry. When drawers roll out, as they do in this English pantry cabinet, you don’t have to worry about digging behind things to find what you need.
