Photos by Michael PartenioLiving Room at a Glance Who lives here: An active family of sixLocation: Wellesley, MassachusettsDesigner: Liz Caan, owner of Liz Caan & Co.The client approached designer Liz Caan with a challenge: Transform the family’s living room as a surprise for his wife’s birthday. This makeover was part of a larger home remodelling project that was going to take about six months. While the wife knew other rooms were being redone, this one would be a surprise. So while the couple went away for a four-day birthday weekend trip, Caan and her design team got to work.Goals The family of six and their pets, including Piggy, seen here, congregate in this room to watch TV and movies. Caan wanted to make it a comfortable and fun hangout space for the whole family.
AfterWith the family’s personality in mind, Caan filled the room with colour and energy, and lots of places to sit.Bold wall paintCaan says there are usually two reasons she’ll choose to cover an entire room in a bold paint colour, one being if the architecture of the room is underwhelming. Painting the walls, crown moulding and mantel the same colour can conceal instead of accentuate. “It’s a good trick to hide things in a room,” she says. The other reason is to create a more cohesive look. “When you use a lot of colour on projects, it automatically gets a little busy,” Caan says. Both reasons applied to this room.Check out these stunning drawing room colour combos
The first level (above the ground floor) is a private area, with bedrooms (master bedroom and an extra room) and a reading room – mainly a floor for the family to spend their quiet time together. Common colour schemes, materials and aesthetics unify the design.Inside the reading room is a bookshelf, plenty of art, sofas and ottomans. “Meant for casual gatherings, it has a breakfast table, a library and a wall full of pictures of the family, making it a more intimate space,” Neogi says.
“The dining space has a view to the outdoors through a glass cube popping out of the built form,” Neogi says. The modern-style dining table has an unusual egg-shaped teak top with a back-lit lattice base. The interiors are finished in dark flooring and a wooden ceiling design; the space outside shows black-and-white chevron patterned flooring.Dining table: Sameer WheatonCheck out these dining tables that are perfect for relaxed get togethers
For optimum viewing, where should you place the TV? Place the TV at eye-level For the best viewing angle, place the TV low so that when you are seated, your head is even with the middle of the screen. You’ll be most comfortable if you can sit looking straight ahead, rather than up or down at the screen.
