I've found that stoneware is more likely to chip, but much easier to clean up after it altogether breaks. :) I'd stick with porcelain or china, in a pattern that you expect to be around for a while so you can get replacements. Or melamine! Put a few area rugs in the kitchen and dining areas to intercept a few dropped items. The floor gets dented by these drops too. And don't be too hard on BF. Some people just drop stuff. They often can't help it. (I'm assuming he cleans the mess!)
