Also like the idea of a place to put keys and things, mail, that are useful near the door, though this floating one takes up a bit too much space all on its own - such a shelf could be built into a cupboard

The elements are good but not practical to have the seat just behind the door, if there are several guests the one sitting gets in the way of the one going out the door or coming in..
