Could the glass doors (behind them are the dishes) be clad in thin horizontal slats? What do you think about wrapping the LR-facing island with shelves, rather than cabinets?

The color of that wood, those drawer pulls feel very classically warm-modern to me. I would be very happy and comfortable with this look with the exception of maybe wanting a more interesting backsplash. I don't want a colorful backsplash, maybe neutrals with texture or tone-on-tone design. Some of the elements may be becoming a little dated - the brushed aluminum frame glass doors. But in the main, I like it a lot. If we needed to have the oven where it is, then I would want the wall behind it to carry from the same stainless steel of the hood.

I like the color contrast on the island between the darker wood and the concrete or faux concrete counter. (Overall, this kitchen is too pale and clinic-looking. A somewhat darker wood and a more interesting backsplash would be close to what I want.

The darkest that I would want to go. Very chic. The counter is interesting. The eating area is not delineating by being at a very different height, but by the material. I could be very happy with that, and then something more sturdy around the range.

I have been favoring lighter counters, but I could get behind this color motif. A little Japanese feeling to have the color of teak, bamboo-leaf, and charcoal, and I think we'd both be happy to have very slight Japanese themes picked up elsewhere.
