johnjoydesign's Ideas
John comment. This is a "beach style" design. I like it and can picture something similar with a left garage orientation and retaining walls on both sides of the driveway. The stairs in this design are too large and would obscure views from the rest of the basement. Sue's Comment: Take the stairs away and have entry as originally designed through the middle on bottom. Not big enough windows/sliders.
John comment. This pic was in a section on ideas dedicated to the use of taupe and accent colours. I like the transition from the garage/driveway level to the higher grade, something we will have to design carefully with a second garage at the rear. Even after our recent downsize, the house we are building will be huge relative to the neighbours and we will want to use colour and contrasts to downplay it carefully.
John comment. Far too formal. You would need a surveyor to set up the furniture. I do like the high ceiling, the pot lights and the small high windows. When I cover up the green couches I like the bright colours. The small windows would be an effective way to bring in light and take away the basement impression to a darker corner of the basement.
John comment. I like this concept for my office/ second bedroom. Having 2 work stations with under table files would allow Sue and I to enjoy the water view and have our coffees/ bills on the table between. The vaulted ceiling of course would be higher. This is an area where some wood tones would be nice. Like the 'false' rafters.
John comment. Tim. I like the idea of a single 16x32, 10'Wx12'H door, garage in one of the back corners of the property. We can discuss. My earlier comments about a high basement ceiling to accommodate MH and even a boat was based on assumption most of basement would be potential garage and the elevations would work. They in fact don't work as is not only the basement definition (vs storey) compromised but the max first floor level above grade is as well. Also the overall building height would be an issue. I would have rejected the 11' ceiling garage idea on the proposed 22x22 garage as not practical. Would suggest a separate garage with same metal roof and slope.
John comment. Joy might like this. I like the vertical installation of machines as a space saver - dryer on top.
John comment. Nice for the future front load. Top load machines would fit in nicely for now. Nice to have a large sink (as I do now) in the laundry. Window would be better on the side allowing for shelves on the wall for detergent etc storage. This photo has room for a couple of sun flowers!
John comment. Like the white trim contrast. Not sure about the grey.
John comment. I like this modern exterior. Perhaps a cement board siding would give this finish. Shows what garage doors can do to enhance horizontal lines on this narrow design.
John comment. I don't particularly like this TV fireplace combo but do like the concept of a gas fireplace on the South / bedroom wall. With a larger TV perhaps some sort of storage on sides. I know this adds $$$'s so reality probably leads one to settle for a fireplace and a TV mounted on the painted drywall.
John comment. I like the large (would guess 48" panels) opening windows. This picture shows how furniture placement can work around a glass wall.
John comment. I like the large glass windows.
John comment. Don't like. Far too dark.
John comment. I guess I like the lighter colours. This lighting over the mirror is nice.
John comment. This looks nice but the idea of trying to keep this sparkling clean (too much glass) makes it unacceptable. We are hoping to keep this house as low maintenance as possible
John comment. I like the idea of a double sink and I like the bright colours in this picture. This unit is far too big. A single unit of 24" drawers between the sinks should be enough. I don't like the on wall lighting. Mirrors are nice. Nice to incorporate a medicine cabinet behind mirror(s).
John comment. This washer dryer installation looks nice and is more accessible for possible maintenance. Front load machines are nice but would have to be mounted on a base for Sue and I. We will probably keep our top load machines until they break so it would be nice to have a design that could later be modified to accommodate.
John comment. I like the vaulted ceiling. The idea of a couple of exposed beams (salvaged from trees about to be removed) and the painted / stained wood ceiling is appealing. Backpeddle, I guess beach trees are full of sand and very hard on tools.
John comment. This shower I don't like.
John comment. If house was to be shortened by several feet (single 15' garage) to allow placement closer to the road as well as more space for a garage at the rear, then the 2 rooms at the North end plus the laundry and second bath could be combined into a combination bedroom/ office, combined bath (with tub-shower in MBR suite) and laundry and probably have enough space left over for Joy to have a pantry near elevator. Would rather have washer dryer more accessible rather than as in this picture.
