In one daughter’s bedroom, two alcoves create cozy nooks — one for a window seat, the other for a built-in desk.

From a high-end design point of view, it’s the most beautiful space to work from — it’s calming, practical, clean and creatively inspiring. The way the light streams in, the scale, the colors, the shape and the access give the studio an almost spiritual feeling when inside.

This kitchen desk has a bit of everything for communication: custom corkboard, chalkboard, dry-erase board and calendar.

An appliance garage is a good solution for keeping these things handy yet hidden. The rolling door typically seen on appliance garages is called a tambour door and is readily available at home improvement stores.

One thing many of us didn’t have to consider during our last kitchen renovation was the personal devices that seem to need an endless supply of wires and juice. Phones, tablets, laptops and their wires can quickly take over your outlets and counters. Cooking and delicate electronic equipment are a terrible mix. Providing room above this desk keeps things out of the way in this kitchen. Another lovely detail worth noting is the waterfall counter that extends across the desktop and down to the floor. This picks up on a similar detail on the kitchen island in the same room.

his workspace has sliding glass doors. These are a great choice for a home office, because they provide privacy when you need it while still allowing natural light in from the next room.

Glossy black walls, trim and floors create an opulent backdrop for a plush Moroccan-style rug and a hammered pendant light in this stunning home office. If your room gets good natural light, the high sheen of the black walls will actually help the room feel brighter than you might think — but be aware that rooms without much natural light may feel too dark with black walls. In a mostly black and white scheme, it often helps to include a small touch of color, like the pink Mongolian lamb pillow in this space; a colorful vase or tray would also work. Tip: Consider placing your workstation against the wall and floating a second desk in the center of the room. This provides a space free of cords and clutter where you can meet with clients or simply spread out.

Professional polish. Just because you’re not in a big office building doesn’t mean you shouldn’t treat your workspace with the same respect you would if you were surrounded by colleagues. Try setting out your business cards on a glamorous tray, like the snake-print one shown here; put matching pens or pencils in a gleaming metal holder; and use real stationery to pen thank-yous from time to time instead of emailing.

Nice feminine study: An oversize pendant light from Ikea sets the tone in this delightfully charming space. A big, cushy ottoman in the center of the room can do double duty as an extra seat and a coffee table, and the love seat is perfect for welcoming visitors. A light, spring-inspired color palette and stylized floral motifs make for a fresh, feminine space.

A narrow space can be put to maximum use with a row of floor-to-ceiling shelving on one side and a desk, cupboards and more shelves on the other. Not a scrap of space is wasted, but there’s still room to move around — or do a spot of yoga — in the middle.

built-in desks, and I just love this one. It pulls out from under the kitchen countertop. It might have been planned as a work area or a desk, but either way it works well, along with the built-in seating, for a multifunctional space.
