clematis is so beautiful and grows really well in zone 8b (that's my zone, too!) The combo with roses can't be improved upon in my opinion. I'm sad that you're taking out the lilac, they're my favourite.

You might consider 'Tangerine Beauty' Crossvine. It does well in zone 8 and is evergreen. It is easy to grow, attaching to most surfaces with tendrils, and produces an abundance of blooms over a long season. Your full-sun exposure would be perfect. Happy gardening!
