Old, beat-up wooden ladders are such a popular decorating item these days that they can be hard to find. But if you have one taking up space in the garage, consider putting it to good use as a plant stand. It's not easy getting height in the garden. This does the trick.

There is one room in the house that serves just one function: soaking. "Everyone in this family enjoys a tub, so that was an important part of the design," says Horowitz. She created a separate sun-filled tub room that the whole family uses.

The master bath's pièce de résistance is its sculptural copper tub. "Bathing in the tub is an exquisite experience," says Dutton.

Upstairs, the kids' bathroom features plenty of hooks, storage baskets and shelving units. Radiant-heat floors keep toes warm in the winter.

Wood floors. Designers and architects are eschewing the notion that wood floors don't belong in the bath. Instead, wood flooring is extended throughout homes and into bathrooms like this one, lending a seamless look. When properly sealed (with no- or low-VOC sealers, please), wood floors in the bath need not present any added challenges.

The en suite guest bathroom features clean lines and modern fixtures.

The counter shown here is made from glass that's been painted on the back side. Glass is a great counter material, and the thickness of glass used as a counter gives it a strength that's difficult for other surfaces to match. It's such an unexpected material for this use that it never fails to get a positive response.

A pocket door between the main part of the master bathroom and a small room containing the commode is another clever space saver, as are the wall-mounted faucets and vessel sinks. In case you're wondering, yes, there is a shower; the photographer is standing next it. "One of the biggest compliments I've received about this house was from a mentor who told me that it doesn't just appeal to architects and artists, but to most people, because it has a calming and comfortable feel before you even start to unpeel the layers of the details," Bubnowski says. It's true; whether you know the stylistic origins of a bracket or simply want to stash your board and hit the outdoor shower, this home's good vibes have a universal appeal.

The master bathroom continues the relaxed feel. White walls, a ceiling that vaults to from 9' to 12' (as you can see in the mirror's reflection), natural light and translucent glass doors keep the space feeling open. A perfectly smooth counter material is less important in a bath than it is in a kitchen so why not use tile? The glass tile used on this counter and backsplash adds an interesting texture that wouldn't be possible with any other material.

In the bathroom. Pendants hung in front or to the sides of a mirror in a bathroom can be a good alternative to more traditional sconces. The height at which they are hung should provide the best lighting while avoiding being so low that one would bump their head when leaning over the sink. When selecting fixtures for a bathroom make certain they are rated for damp rooms.

Daltile Fabrique™ Soleil Linen - $7.00 » Slip resistance. Another important rating is a given tile's coefficient of friction, abbreviated as C.O.F. The COF refers to a tile's natural resistant to slip and it's measured by the force required to slide an object across a surface divided by the object's weight. Lower C.O.F. numbers indicate less friction and the floor will provide less traction. Higher C.O.F. numbers indicate that a floor will be less slippery.

No ideabook on stools would be complete without a ceramic stool. This one really stands out providing color and pattern against expanses of solid white and dark stone.

This bathroom feels pretty Zen with its cool gray walls and white porcelain vessel sinks. The simple red floral accent adds life and warmth.

The wood and stone combined in this bathroom vanity are extremely tactile surfaces. They need no embellishment.

Minimalist design 1. Choose high-quality and beautiful material, then let it stand on its own. In this entryway, the wall is simply stunning in its own right. The gold leaf wall treatment glows with warmth. No need for art or console table in front of it. It is complete all by itself.
