I much prefer the window design shown here, aka lots of clerestory windows and some narrow yet tall windows, than floor-to-ceiling windows. Floor-to-ceiling windows, to me, make me feel the house is naked. This gives much more privacy, yet plenty of light. I also adore the polished concrete floors with river stone aggregate. It looks a lot like terrazzo.
This is amazing and entirely unique on many levels. I love the ultra creative solution this artist came up with. Such a beautiful, enveloping, womb-like space to read and cozy up to. And I love the various portals and openings in this structure, for firewood, a fire, and more. Yet it still looks beautifully clean and modern (in a space-ship pod sort of way).
Lots of light, because the designer who lives here opened up the living room wall and put in an 8’ x 5’ window, and also added glass doors on either side of the fireplace. I really love the contrast of the white walls (Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore) with the black framing of the glass doors and fireplace edging and tiles. She took out the former brick fireplace surround and hearth, and replaced it with that lovely black hexagonal tiles… makes it so much more modern and clean. She also ran the concrete floors right up to the fireplace, so no need for a space-wasting hearth.
Although this is NOT my usual style, which is mid-century modern infused with eclecticism and fun, this room still manages to speak to me. The colours work together beautifully, from the deep reds of the Oriental carpet to the green-tinged blues of the wall to all the tan and wheat colours in the horse triptych and sofa. It looks so very warm and inviting… I’d love to be a guest in this living room!
