How to Get Your Bathroom Vanity Lighting Right

Q

Shelf lights. Adding lights below your shelves gives them a jewelry-case-like effect that makes even everyday pieces such as drinking glasses or barware look radiant. It also adds an interesting layer of light that can help diversify your lighting scheme — you don’t want light coming just from the ceiling — in a space where there’s no good spot for floor or table lights or pendants.

Generally, pendants are installed 28 to 36 inches above the surface they'll light, 60 to 72 inches from the floor to the base of the shade, and 24 to 30 inches apart (in the case of multiple fixtures grouped together). In bathrooms, hang the lights at eye level. Over a kitchen island or other work zone, pendants should be mounted in a position and at a height where they'll stay out of the way. In a hallway or foyer, be sure people won't bang their heads on them.

The recommended height to hang a pendant above a table is 28 to 32 inches, but the fixture can be hung slightly higher or lower depending on personal preference, fixture size and ceiling height. Above an island, pendants should be placed 28-34" above the countertop, or 72" above the floor. Make sure you are not staring directly into the lights. For hallway fixtures, an 18-24" clearance between the bottom of the fixture and the height of the tallest person.
