Principles of Design
Emma: Positive Critique - There are several elements in this design. There is symmetry, emphasis and contrast. The room is a mirror image and has the same furniture. The room has light and dark colors for contrast and the fireplace is the focal point. The rooms effects go together well and make a calming environment. The room really draws your eye and makes you feel comfortable.
Taylor: Positive Critique- This room captures three principles of interior design, those being asymmetrical balance, harmony (unity & variety), and rhythm by contrast. This space embodies asymmetrical balance because there is a large window and chair on one side of the fireplace and a plant, wall art, and sofa on the other, all of which contribute to the balanced feel of the room. With the plant and window being of similar size, the visual weight on either side are relatively similar. The chair and sofa successfully counter one another, for they are both bulky pieces of furniture. The space also encompasses harmony (unity & variety). Yellow, black, and white colors are repeatedly utilized throughout the room, bringing unity to the space. Other repeated elements of the space, such as the soft textures of both the blanket and rug as well as the pillowy cushions on the chair and sofa, help to achieve harmony. Variety also has a presence in the space because of the intense contrast between the white and black interior. The room incorporates rhythm by contrast by directly placing black and white beside one another, creating opposition by an abrupt change in value. The alternating co...
Taylor: Negative Critique- This room lacks three principles of interior design, those being balance, proportion and scale, and emphasis. This space fails to express balance because the windows on the back wall are not centered, and the different sizing of the bookshelves are simply off-putting. The visual weight resides on the rightmost side of the room, where the couch takes up a hefty portion of the space. This room would look more appealing if it had equal visual weight on either of its sides. It also lacks visually appealing proportion and scale. The couch and footrest are very large and take up a great deal of of space. There is little room for walking and accessing the windows and bookshelves. The room would feel more open had the couch been half the size of the one pictured. This room also lacks a clear focal point. There are multiple dominating elements that compete for the eye’s attention. The large couch and footrest are both possible focal points, but it is unclear which one was intended to bring emphasis.
Emma: Negative Critique - There are several elements. There is repetition for the carpet and bedding. They have repeating patterns. There is scale and proportion because there is tall ceilings and a tall bed frame. There is also emphasis. The bed is the main focal point. This room is not appealing because there are too many patterns that do not look good together. There also is a lot of open space. The colors also make the room appear smaller.
