Dark and more substantial mantel balances and updates the stone (even with a TV mounted over menatel). Removing your built in cabinets would accentuate the height of the ceilings and open the room.

Then you could remove valances over windows and add neutral drapes that would also accentuate the height of the room and pull upper and lower windows together.

Shabby chic...stain shutters with black window surround. You have a lot of siding and the light paint could stay. Would also consider adding same shingle looking siding (like on the upper) to face of portico to add balance.
