Here is an example of paving that might be perceived as quite modern as it is smooth sawn, but it is mixed with more traditional cobble setts. The opportunitu for creating patter with these materials is almost infinite. But I would suggest we work with the shape or use the same paving and create a more subbtle patter such as the circle in the other image here.
You can break the paving up with the use of a circle, whilst I would not necessarily advocate one like this, we could create a similar effect with a simple circle of paving cut into the random pattern, or we could follow the shape of your space with the same idea or even a contrasting colour of paving.
Also an example of patter created with different materials but obviously much more modern, that said, still using bassalt setts.
