House Ideas for Greg
As I think about how we will use the house and the traffic flow - we will most likely go in and out of the kitchen door most often - so maybe we put some type of coat and boot storage and bench near the kitchen door. But we don't have the space inside - so maybe on the outside - seems strange - but it will have a roof and there could be a bench to put on shoes, etc. and the storage could have doors to protect what is inside from dirt, etc. .
HI Greg - for the island or additional work space in the kitchen. I like the idea of the furniture piece to add character. Having a custom piece built is fine or if we nail down the dimensions, I love antique shopping in Europe and once we can go out, I would enjoy finding the right piece to be an island.
Like this fireplace and also the doors opening to outside. I like the shape of this stone as-well-as the random rubble pattern. We like rounded river-rock too, so a factor on what we actually use may be what’s available close by and naturally. We mentioned before that, if possible, we’d like to use the rock that we excavate from on-site. If excavated rock is minimal or poor quality we incorporate it in landscape for retaining walls. Also, with this fireplace and stone generally, I tend to like the look of wider at the bottom and narrowing upwards.
We like the overall look of this house - the amount of timber, the board and batten. We would not paint/stain red, maybe use a light stain or even leave it natural to weather. Greg, what do you think about the durability and patina of western red cedar, aspen, etc? But overall we like the simple, clean look of this Alaskan Cabin.
Nice fireplace but like the stone and random rubble style of yours at Samish Island better. I like that the stone narrows but have seen this done that I like much better. Like all the windows. We include this as a reference.
LIke this amount of overhang. Also for our project like the built in shelves and the amount of timberframe. Deb tends to prefer the ceiling be painted SIP’s. I like the wood, but am ok we paint! Maybe as in your other design, the main ceiling painted with a wood accent here or there?
Like the amount of timber and also like the variety of ceiling - painted main ceiling with wood accent in office room (see next pic). Like the detail, for example dovetail joints on the timber frame. This project has a window seat that we like but haven't been able to find the space/location for a windowseat yet.
Example of a mix of ceiling types; Painted main ceiling with wood accent in office room. Appreciate the joinery.
Love how this opens to outside. We want as much of the entire view side of the house and barn as possible to open like this. I tend to prefer the type of doors that slide in a track as opposed to these “accordion” type doors. Sliders will leave smaller openings but also won’t impede on our interior space which will be limited.
like the live edge - for our build would like a two level peninsula but table height not counter height
We like the overhang for outdoor living - especially outside the bedrooms. We like the covered connection between the garage and the house and this area will be our outdoor kitchen; We think County codes read that a certain sized covering/roof (6’?) between out barn and house will make it easier to build another structure later if we desire. The garage is what we have in mind only more of a barn look. We like the outside timbers and would add stone bases (maybe corners only). Would prefer slate patio instead of wood.
this type of half height shelf - behind the sofa to add more shelves given our smaller square footage. Anywhere else that would utilize otherwise wasted space.
We like the simple design of this house, broken up with the design feature of the dormer. Add some stone accents, perhaps just on outside posts? The main house and two story piece on the left side are at right angles, as we envision our house and barn. My single favorite of your designs. Like the shakes and maybe add board and batten on bottom 3/4.
Is this an option for possible design - love the quantity of windows with the outside beams and the overhang.
Not exactly our style but an idea of the materials and the ridge windows
Put bookshelves on each side and this is perfect - but haven't found a spot for it in our build yet.
Idea for headboard with shelves for the master-bedroom. I’d extend the shelved headboard up to the ceiling, especially for our bed which is against a wall. I think in terms of “built-ins” partly b/c I assume that go into the wall at least a little and utilize space.
Idea for adu - amount of glass plus a fireplace, etc.
Like this timber ceiling - large timbers and wood joists, not sure about the total wood ceiling. Again, Could SIP’s be placed between 2X6 rafters? I’m trying to envision this!?
Like the amount of overhang and the heaters in the overhang for the outdoor kitchen area. I like the stone but this is larger than I’d like, and too smooth - thinking bout it, I tend to like the rougher textured, more random rubble. Page 15 (top right) of Albert H Good’s “Patterns .....” 1990, Caddo lake state park, Texas; Roughly textured, varied in size and shape but squarish, rectangularish, and (seemingly) randomly placed. These stone bases in this “UrbanRestoration” picture are too civilized; Maybe my Caddo Lake ex. is too “uncivilized “? After seeing Caddo Lake I realized the Ob tower at Moran State Park was a great example of a pier I’d like and emailed a pic!
Ob tower at Moran State Park. An example of columns. Would love to reproduce this tower in one of the columns that’s in a prominent place to be seen. Decided against having a column like this but leaving for idea of stone work on Orcas
Interesting blend of glass, wood, stone. Interesting idea for the skylight/roof light. We like the partial stone wall - perhaps to enclose the outside grill or as an idea for the outdoor fireplace?
Like this stone fireplace and the partial stone wall. This is getting close to my ideal fireplace. Only, make it taper upward; Perhaps leave some of the edge rough, exposed, or uneven to compliment the “broken” stone wall.
Idea of glass wall for bedroom with seating outside
Idea of the wood, stone, rustic that we are looking for - really like the overall materials and look.
Excellent example of a stone base to support a wood post. I also like the ridge vents and would add glass for light. Our property is going to be somewhat dark we think.
Timber frame with the wall of glass that opens onto the outside with stone patio. I love this - smooth (low-trip) stone patio, sliding glass doors, and (hand hewn?) timber framing looks simple but sturdy. This house has understated rustic elegance - looks exceedingly comfortable.
Another example of hand hewn timber frame we like. This is also a good example of the painted ceiling SIP’s Deb would prefer to an all wood ceiling. Are hand hewn timbers raised from an old barn generally more expensive than new timber?
This gives a general idea of what we had in mind for stone incorporated into the design. It is also a barn design we like.
This would be the dream for the inside outside living - glass that opens and a door for access if you don't want to have the glass wall open.
This is the type of tilting window we had in mind. We have had french doors that tilt like this also. So, may be a good idea for the bedrooms. Are awesome for ventilation, even when raining. Like the idea of smaller tilting windows along the Karen lane side - not sure if these would work to allow for ventilation
Another view of a kitchen with a wall of glass. Also like the access to the outdoor kitchen! Looks like smaller vent- windows above sink.
Like this kitchen concept with all windows and no upper cabinets. Then use the back wall for all the storage and the refrigerator. This wall of sliding glass is excellent.
I like this idea for the bed nook - shelves facing the bed and also facing out - with an alcove for the bed to sit - with the windows above. Feels cozy, functional, and unique
