Hedland Extension
Like the look of this. Would it be feasible to have the library raised like this using the existing concrete slab underneath? (We do prefer that the floor of the new library is higher than the existing slab, for drainage and gardens surrounding it). Has some other issues though like floor insulation and type of floor if there is a void under the library.
Like mix of surfaces and this is type of double garage door we prefer
Window seat for the west window . We would want storage drawers or cupboards under the seat.
We like this surface , rock walls or part of the structure. We have a lot of rock garden walls on the block already.
We like this cladding. Maybe wider stripes or vertical rather than horizontal emphasis. This has too much dark cladding in a large wall which might be a bit overwhelming.
We like the ambience .would prefer the cladding to not be too overwhelming. Here the lighter steel colour helps as would a different surface in the mix as in the other picture with orange and yellow panels. We like this look.
We like interesting roof lines
This is a rough sketch for the possibility of having an L shape breezeway that means you can walk under cover from the back garage door to the house. There probably would need step or steps and handrail in two places. We need your advice whether the floor surface of the breezeway should be hard or decking. It’s on the south side in shade. Probably the library south wall will be blank to put shelving. The type of roof for breezeway would depend on the angle of the garage and library roof. We would like the back door to of the garage to be glass so garage will not be dark on the workshop bench end. High windows on the north side of the garage would help to do this.
Could this roof line be good for our extension .? The building behind the rocks would correspond to our garage and the bit behind would be the library. In our build the garage will be wider than the library though. We have said before we want to have the high side on the north which may be the best to stop sun being blocked to the north lounge room window and front garden near the entrance,so not sure if that’s better. Of course our library and garage are going to be higher than our house so the breezeway can’t be at same level as in this picture .we don’t want the roof surfaces to be higher than necessary because of shading of gardens to the south.
Breezeway with raised bridge. One side of our breezeway from the house to the library will need a fence and gate in about the same place as the present gate. An artistic design integrating a fence/gateway with the breezeway would look good. Not sure how you treat the ground under a bridge. Would you plant or pave .? we want to make sure drainage isn’t obstructed there. Will also need a fence/gate on the Northside of the library. Don’t want a bod standard fence like we have at present!
We included this because we think the breezeway from the house will have to be elevated above the ground for drainage
This is an idea for the western window on the back wall of the library . in winter it is lovely to sit or lie in the sun in that spot. if the big western window was not full length and came down to cupboards with a mattress along the top it would be good to lie or sit on in the sun.The trees behind this window are deciduous. We need help to work out how it would work in the back corner where the west and north walls meet This picture is against a wall but we are thinking it would be like a window seat.
This shows a possible placement of shelves so that we can fit in 50 to 60 linear metres of bookshelves. If the shelves only go round the edges of the wall we won’t fit all the books in. The back west wall can’t be used for books as we want windows there to look at the garden. if we had a high ceiling we could have higher bookshelves accessible by steps or short ladder. The western windows will be shaded by 2 large trees. We want a storage cupboard somewhere but it might be better not to have it in the corner drawn here as it’s not in a smooth line with bookshelves. Maybe it could be in sw corner somewhere near the library entrance door.Somewhere on a wall we also need a space for a small reverse cycle air conditioner
We like the colour bond cladding ,black or dark grey .Because we have such a long expanse of wall we could break it up by expanses of colour in the second half of the southern garage wall closest to the house. Or it could be a different surface, a greyish rock or a change in direction of the line ,or colour of cladding. We were planning to have the same double glazing as the house, which is dark on the outside and white on the inside. The dark colour looks black in the shade but has a brownish tinge when the sun shines on it so it might be an issue if choosing dark grey or black cladding .We really like the look of wood surfaces but we don’t want the work of upkeep of it, but we do like the look of a wooden garage door.
We want more light in the room than this. We don’t like the look of these bookshelves
The skylights in this photo look great but would make the library too hot in summer.
We really like the look of this room.We don’t want a skylight window as it would be too hot. But we could have a long thin window from floor to ceiling height on the north side to add northern light and to see greenery ( no bookshelves across the window like this photo though) It would have to be at the back of the library to be private ,not looking into neighbours front yard, somewhere in the western 3 metres of the room. We like the ambience of this room with white walls and bookshelves and timber cupboard at the base .
We want the back western wall to relate to the garden as in this design but that might be a landscaping issue rather than part of the build. We want the path going round the north of the garage and library on the northern side to be sloping and no steps,as that will be our access for a wheelbarrow. We like the way the big glass area overlooks the garden.
We don’t want mud walls. We like the contemporary look though
We don’t like this one, especially not the tiles on the roof.We would prefer a metal roof. The back western windows will be a big expanse of glass like this looking out onto the garden. We want uPVC windows from solace to match windows in the house. We want a large window and a normal glass door on the back going out onto what is now a deck. The windows we have in the house are dark on the outside and white on the inside
A ladder could be good depending on the height of walls
We like the look of these surfaces
The only thing that appeals here is the little bridge joining the extension. This could maybe solve our drainage problems near the front of the house.( floor of breezeway joining house front verandah and library
We like idea of a wooden door on the front of the garage. Single door preferred
We don’t want a roof this high
This wall is too monolithic. This is an issue for the south wall of the garage.
Don’t like the metal runners of the compactus on the floor so on reflection, a moveable compactus might not be best
We like the garage timber door
We like the light airy ambience . We need to decide whether to have polished concrete floor or timber over concrete.
We like the way the room relates to the outdoor space but we don’t want a big door like this one
Steps to library?
