We installed LED light tape strips to the underside of the cabinets, and inside the one with inserts.

These pictures belonged to my mother and they fit perfectly atop the cupboards.

After three tries I finally got the cabinet inserts right. I made a coordinating panel for the sink window that affords us privacy, but still allows light to enter.

In the end we decided on no crown moldings. We also had new door fronts made and they are wonderful!

Again, to tie in the black granite countertop we black-tiled the 'counter' of the TV cabinet. The cabinets were all installed in 1957 and they are in good condition. That is why we recycled them rather than buying new. We still have a few details on our punchlist, but for the most part we consider this project completed. Whew!

We wanted to balance out the black granite so we tiled the toaster oven alcove in black. The debate about crown moldings continues...

Third attempt at installation was a success. Now we are debating about crown moldings. I don't want them, but hubby does. I like the clean look and its much easier to clean up there without them. Stay tuned... ;)

The first attempt at installing the granite resulted in breakage because of the unevenness of the base cabinets. Many frustrating hours of fine-tuning the top of the bases made sure everything was level. We even pulled out the bases and shored up the floor where an old porch used to be (1917-1957).

We wanted to do a simple paint-the-cabinets/get a new countertop project. We didn't realize that the old countertop dipped down 3/4" at one end.This would have been fine if we were getting formica, but we decided to get granite.
