The patio is composed of full-range bluestone, which features a mix of colors. Drzewiecki used true red clay bricks to break up the patio and delineate the three main outdoor rooms. This reinforces some cozy proportions within the large patio. Beyond the patio, Drzewiecki added deciduous shrubs and ornamental trees to give the backdrop more character and color.
Drzewiecki did not want the patio to be one long, monolithic rectangle. The circular edge of the lounge area, the half circle around the fountain seen here and other edges of the patio break things up. “These edges allowed us to create more interesting, nonlinear beds around the patio,” he says. Cottage garden style inspired the beds — lots of color, foliage and shape variations.
Peaceful Patio in Northern California Landscape designer Ben Pritchard of Pritchard Landscape Design helped transform what was once the site of a patchy lawn into an inviting entry garden for a client in Menlo Park, California. “We installed a privacy fence, low-maintenance gravel garden and low-maintenance plants surrounding the border,” Pritchard says. Mature trees make the area primarily shaded, but it also experiences hours of filtered sunlight, allowing plants such as golden Scotch moss and white striped flax lily to thrive.
This driveway in Salt Lake City formerly featured concrete right up to the fence, which did not make for a welcoming arrival or provide any vertical screening from neighbors. As part of the new driveway design, Landform Design Group cut planting beds into the concrete and planted a row of columnar ‘Frans Fontaine’ hornbeam to provide a lush border.
An idea for outside the foyer.
Like the look of the tiered zones. More interesting than a plain level garden.
Love the indoor outdoor look. like many ideas in the house, but it is a little too modern for me. No to glass walkway and cable rails on stairs. Yes to the pool! Ceiling of 16 feet seems too high for the space. would like a wider room. Love the spare bedroom out back above the garage. Can use it for an exercise room, or it enables you to use one of the indoor guest rooms for a guest room. Love the courtyards!
I like the privacy created by the fence and gate.
Private, calm space with richly colored plants.
Like a courtyard, but I might enclose it as part of the house. I do not like the Moroccan decoration.
I like the low maintenance, particularly no need to water. Use a darker color gravel.
Idea for yard, but cannot have the roofed area next to the house if in the back yard.
Peaceful, calm space.
Idea for patio / terrace.
I like the bamboo fencing.
I like the garden nook idea.
I like the water feature for a garden.
LIke the landscaping, especially low-water aspect. - A landscape designer turns a basic builder yard into a terraced, low-water dreamscape with a Cor-Ten steel surprise
Low maintenance yard ideas with lots of flowers and other plants.
