You may want to try to run electrical to the remaining vertical wall on the right (the support for the stair landing) to get power into the wall itself, while everything is open. If you want to highlight the staircase wall then your could use earthy colours such as a yellow ochre! The wall could be enhanced even more by using suitable frames and making a good collage composition for all the photos that you have (I can see many lying on the dining table). This colour would match well with wooden furnitures

I have some suggestions if you are thinking budget friendly changes. Make a photo gallery with different size frames and arrange them parallel to the stairs, so you can enjoy each photo as you climb up. And for the area that will be on a level with your upper floor, try some pretty decal that will connect the photo gallery to upper level. And last, if you have budget add some beautiful hanging lights in the stairwell. Also think about repositioning your refrigerator.
