First figure out what you want to have in the space . Pool tables take up huge amounts of space is that something you want? Do have a bathroom in the basement ? You will need a lot of pot lights for games . If the TV is down there then IMO you need to have a designated space for that and some seating. As guest room I would say not practical if this is your only TV space . Great for a kids hangout as long as you don’t mind trying towatch TV while kids are doing what kids usually make a lot of noise . You really need to think this through , Then come back with a to scale floor plan and a list of what you want from this space. That is a big space and can be quite wonderful with some planning.

When we finished our basement we painted the walls SW Mindful Grey. I really like it - I don't think it looks dreary at all. It has a greenish hue in the lighting - my basement too gets very little natural light.

Green. On the walls as well as the ceiling.

The right shade of (cool toned?) green will look awesome with your wood stairs/railing *and* the slate.

Sorry wall color last thing to worry about .
