Help with roof color - too dark?
Hello. We are about to re-roof our house this week (a roofer became available). The house is white and as of now, it will stay white for the foreseeable future. The roofer suggested Certainteed or Tamko shingles and the colors of Certainteed Georgetown Gray or Tamko Virginia Slate. Up-close the Georgetown Gray has a bit of green in it (which I'm not a fan of). I haven't seen the Tamko shingles and the lumber yard said Certainteed is a better shingle. Another person suggested the IKO Harvard Slate (the roofer is less of fan of the IKO). In this photo the roof feels very mid-tone but in person I feel it is darker (I'm know lighting makes a big dif. I have a photo of the house in shade and the roof of course looks darker).
In looking at the shingles I found myself gravitating to the Certainteed Pewterwood (Landmark) - they don't have the green in them, but they are a little darker than the Georgetown.
What do you suggest? I'd like a nice medium gray - and rather skew to medium dark vs. medium light, but don't want a dark black roof. We have a lot of roof visually. Is the Pewterwood too dark? I thought a medium / medium dark roof would also give the house a little visual punch - but would the Pewterwood overwhelm the house? Thank you.

4 years agoI agree a bit darker color would be nice. Without seeing color samples, I like something similar to this shade of gray.

Comments (11)In my opinion, a cuckoo clock is a very detailed design, but you say you want a simple design for the room. When you say simple, are you thinking of no wallpaper, no wainscoting, and no accent color on the walls? It seems as if dark orange is a color you favor. I see it in art images and in your curtain color. If this was my space, I would paint all the walls one or two shades lighter than the beige of the sofa to keep the room as bright as possible because the room has no direct sunlight. I would paint the ceiling 1/4 (one part wall color to three parts white). I would use a satin or eggshell paint instead of matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss paint. I see some discoloration on the wall behind the sofa where the brown color of the sofa frame has worn off onto the wall. I suggest attaching bumper dots or strips on the wood frame of the sofa (similar to the ones used to keep cabinet doors from making a lot noise when they are closed quickly). I would consider painting the sides of the column with the cuckoo clock brown to match the clock. I would do this to call attention to the clock. I would remove the orange curtains and replace them with floor-to-ceiling length draperies hung as close to the ceiling as possible to make the room seem larger and taller. I would change the drapery color to match the walls, perhaps in a muslin-like fabric, which is a casual fabric. I always take my art to a professional framer. I have conservation matting and museum glass used for my art. I would have the three images you have rearranged as a collage in a very large single frame with medium to wide matting between the images. I would have the mat and frame color(s) enhance the images, even if it is a color I might never have thought of on my own. I would hang it above the sofa. I would use the orange drapery fabric to make throw pillows for the sofas. You did not attach a photo of the flooring in the room. A medium tone floor is easier to keep looking clean than a light floor/rug or a very dark floor/rug. Other "Houzzers" will give you completely different ideas. Comments (2)If you could post pictures that would help, also make sure of your building's codes/rules, keep in mind weight, drainage, exposure (sun/wind/light), privacy concerns, lighting, etc. and consider getting professional design help for someone who specializes in roof gardens. You don't have to do everything all at once but a design professional could help you clarify your vision and give you ideas you may not have even thought to incorporate. Comments (12)A soft, warm grey shade would look lovely, and can be as dark or light as you want. A warmer shade will work with the brown stained wood floor, and the grey will complement the black granite. You could have an undertone of green, blue or tan if you didn't want a pure grey. And it would look nice with any silver metal hardware, either polished or satin/brushed, so you could choose pewter, chrome or nickel. It would still work with white trim too....See More

The pewterwood is the main shingle on the sample and in tiny letters you can see the Georgetown gray option (2nd row from top far left) The two other samples that are even darker are the Moire Black and Charcoal black (they are two 'black' options that are basically stacked on top of each other.

3 years agoWell I've got sample photos. I'm between the Pewterwood and Moire Black - Landmark (regular). I've now learned that depending on if we went with pro, vs. regular, etc there are probably some color variations but I haven't been able to see Landmark Pro samples. I expect I'll stick with the reg. Landmark since that is what i was quoted on and so far I haven't seen Pro samples. I am doing all of this remotely and running to a local dealer for samples.
What I'm also realizing (when did I ever think about shingles this much?) is that in the sun vs. shade the color is pretty different (perhaps obvious to others). From left to right - Landmark Charcoal, Georgetown Gray, Pewterwood and Moire Black. On my computer the contrast doesn't look right (I felt the sun photo was all lighter). I like the Moire black in the sun better and the Pewterwood in the shade better. I am now leaning towards Pewterwood as the safe choice - darker (I think) than what we have, I think that is the right direction for me, but as chloebud noted the house is a box with a lot of roof and I don't want the roof to be too 'heavy' looking. But as SapphireStitch I may need to take the chance that the Pewterwood will be dark enough, right now the Moire feels a tad on the dark side, but I don't know if it may really read lighter than the sample when up on the roof.
