Sujithra, Good that you asked. When the cabinets are made in factories they are made a tad smaller than your actual requirement or as per the standard size made by the vendor. Smaller size helps them to make sure it fits in your space. Once a smaller product is fitted in a bigger space - the remaining gap is filled with a 'filler'. Its usually made in the same finish as the shutters so that they are less noticeable. No, it is not essential for the cabinet door to function properly but more for aesthetics.
