What about a dark grey colour like charcoal? Then I would add a bright modern art piece. Tell me what you think.

This room needs some greenery! It's surprising how much difference a little (or even big) plant can make to a room. Theres a few blues, and a lot of dark charcoal, grey in the room - you'd have to compliment the armchair otherwise adding anything too hard would make it lose it's character. Perhaps a light rug to brighten the room, and a coffee table to break it up - which you can also add little colourful items to.

I think the idea of a rug and art piece would instantly change the room. However I think the lamp and the occasional stripes chair needs to go. don't think they match the colour scheme and the look you're going for.

All great suggestions. Could someone help with the type of rug they would recommend. Keeping in mind I want to stay contemporary. Then I could choose a piece of art work.

I wouldn't put a rug down on your lovely carpet. A glass coffee table with flowers, books and some little treasures would look great. Then a large artwork, something you love, but say at least a metre square to create a focal point, bringing the colours out of the painting on to the sofa in cushions. Be brave!

Art should be something you love - choose only what you like - it is a long term investment in who you are. Soft furnishings come and go, but often the colours that appeal to you in art, are also what you will be drawn to in other areas of design. Go with your heart when it comes to art.
