kitchen cabinets

My home was built in 2008. The cabinets are oak solid wood with medium brown stain (very grainy). I purchased the home as an inventory home (love everything but the cabinets). I dislike the cabinets, what are my options...paint them, stain darker color, add hardware, paint the kitchen? I feel that it makes the kitchen look dated. The granite is black. The kitchen feeds to the family room and dining room. Any suggestions or comments would be great... I should also add that my stair case is wood with wrought iron spindles and the fireplace is wood. I also have hardwood throughout the home with neutral tile in the kitchen. I want to maintain the value of the home.

Comments (12)So i’m guessing you’re saying that oil paint/enamel paint looks cheap? That makes sense cause whilst i was growing up, the govt quarters came with oil painted doors and it chipped off in a few years in a sorry state. Don’t want that. So oil paint is out? What I’m gathering is that PU paint is not just paint. It’s a process? So you prime and paint(?) first and then do a protective coating of PU with the thinners and the additives? 11 years agoYour cabinets have a distinctive grain--you can try a paint treatment where you paint them and then rub white wax or a colored paint into the grain, It looks really terrific and you can use any color you want and it can be subtle or bold. Liming can give sort of a driftwood effect (not the pink pickled effect) or it can be black with white grain--my Grandmother's front door was like this and it was beautiful--or it can be white with black or grey grain or tan or whatever color you like.

Whatever you do, I would sand first. It looks like they have a high gloss. Nice to have solid wood though.
