About Us

As an interior designer and artist, Happy Martin creates warm, wonderful, landing places that reflect her clients and their families. A cheerful spirit and nonchalant ease permeate her work, resulting in spaces that are unique, stylish and always comfortable. She strongly believes that a home should be about its owner, and is known for designing creative spaces that are distinct and true to her clients’ vision. Happy graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. She moved to New York City in 1987 to work for the residential design firm Kaplan Sandercock and Associates, followed by the contract design firm, Rosen Perry Preston. In 1992, she started her own company, Happy Martin Interior Design. In 1998, she moved her business to her native North Carolina where she currently resides. Trained to understand the importance of classic design, Happy creates timeless yet current interiors. She incorporates pattern, color and objects to create a comfortable and inviting home. She has gained respect from her clients for her honest approach and her ability to create thoughtful spaces that reflect their individual personalities.

Happy Martin has an incredible eye and depth of resources. We have worked together on our primary residence and also our beach house. I could not be more pleased with the outcome all of our projects.

Ms. Martin has great sense of color and style, and the ability and flexibility to understand and adapt to the client's tastes. She did a marvelous job blending our contemporary and Asian furniture and artwork into our traditional brick colonial ranch style house.

Happy Martin helped us with the interior design of our home and rose to the challenge of working with Chinese antiques and Asian art in a '50's vintage ranch home. She also assisted with an extensive remodel of a wing of the house. Happy is the perfect balance of creativity and practicality. She has wide-ranging experience with a variety of styles, is very flexible, and can easily adapt to the individual style and taste of the homeowner. She has deep knowledge of high quality and distinctive design sources, and is extremely talented at vizualizing the most effective use of a design space. Simply put, she is a first rate interior designer.

Happy has worked with me on many projects, the biggest being a new construction home. She was with us from the very beginning, offering her expertise and advice on all aspects of the process. We wanted a casually elegant home, which is exactly what we have. Happy listens and respects the people she works with, taking into consideration their tastes and opinions. She has excellent taste and knows where to find the most beautiful fabrics, lighting fixtures, wallpapers, etc. Our home was a huge project and she exceeded our expectations in every way. I recently worked with Happy on a redecoration of our daughter's bedroom and again, we were thrilled with the process. I highly recommend her, you will not be disappointed!

I have worked with Happy on a variety of projects for about 10 years. Happy has an eye that is unparalleled. Her selections are always unique and she uses vendors that are outside what you usually see. Sometimes I have trusted her selections even when I have not been able to visualize the final product and I have never been disappointed. She also has an extraordinary eye for detail and a precise sense of space and layout. I highly recommend her.

Happy Martin has been my go to for everything, designing upholstery pieces, wall paint color choices, recovering upholstery and designing and facilitating drapery work. It all has turned out beautifully. She embraces your own style and works well in keeping with your needs. One of her upholstery craftsmen said to me that he could always spot the work of Happy because she has a great eye for beautiful pieces and fabrics. He is right! Always handsome and elegant design work.
