Featured Reviews for Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
Wendy Wilson & Associates
Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"Wendy Wilson did the design of my major home remodel that included the removal of a load-bearing wall, a room addition, and extensive remodeling of existing spaces. She listened to my ideas, added her design expertise, and developed the plans. She was a pleasure to work with, always focusing on what was important to me and what was consistent with the quality I was looking for. Her design ideas were fantastic for my project. She helped me interview contractors, and each one we talked to praised the completeness and quality of her drawings. She ushered the project through the design approval process with the city, so all I had to do was go pay for the building permits. She assisted me in the oversight of all phases of the construction. I'd hire her again in a minute, and highly recommend her services. I now truly love my home for the first time since we bought it in 1974."

Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"Greg Crawford has designed and construction managed two residential, and three commercial remodels for my husband and I since 2006. We like Greg for his imaginative design, thoughtful use of materials, meticulous attention to detail, efficient and unflappable management skills, and responsive followthrough. An example of Greg's thoroughness is he begins a project design by physically spending time both day and night studying the site's light and breeze patterns, the feel and flow of the space, and it's surrounding environment. This important step helps determine for example, window, skylight, and door placement that cannot be accomplished by relying solely on computer models. This extra attention to detail sets Greg apart and contributes to the success of his buildings, and to the ultimate comfort and enjoyment of it's occupants. Another huge plus working with Greg is his adroitness at navigating the murky waters of city bureaucracies. For example, in catching a city map error, Greg saved us weeks of time avoiding unnecessary and costly code requirements. It is a genuine pleasure to work with Greg, and to enjoy the quality results he provides."

Whitcomb Design
Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"We had a leak in our upstairs bathtub. Whitcomb Design discovered that the tub had been incorrectly chosen and installed in a manner that leakage was inevitable. The problem was corrected by installing a higher-quality bathtub with proper design. It has not leaked since that time. Additionally, the water-damaged sub-flooring was also replaced, new floor covering of our choice laid (and a few weeks later, the remnants of the floor covering were installed in the downstairs bathroom), a new bathroom cabinet installed to our specifications, a new sink, plumbing, and granite top installed, bathtub tiling designed and installed, including a new recess for holding razors, shampoo, conditioner, etc., in the bathtub enclosure, a new mirrored medicine cabinet purchased and installed above the new sink, new bathroom lighting installed, new bathtub plumbing installed, including a raised shower head, and new ceiling access in the downstairs bathroom (and repair of the water-damaged ceiling), and a new high-efficiency, taller toilet installed. All of the work was done to perfection and at a reasonable cost, and we love our new bathroom. That project was completed about two years ago. Earlier this year we had Whitcomb Design inspect some dry rot in the eaves and under the rain gutters in the front exterior part of our home. The roofing (installed 30 years ago) was at least partially to blame. The damaged wood was replaced, the two layers of shingle roofing were removed, new superior roofing materials were installed, including better and larger rain gutters and down spouts, damage to the air conditioning return pipes was noted and repaired (without additional cost to us), gutters and down spouts were color coordinated with the newly painted eaves. Several of the down spouts were relocated, and the gutter slopes adjusted for better flow. One of the new "down spouts" was replaced with a beautiful copper "rain chain"; and a new solar-powered attic fan was installed on the upper roof to keep summer attic temperatures lower. Though not a part of the contract, which was thoroughly discussed with us and approved by us, the contractor, at his own time and cost, repaired and repainted our curb mailbox to match the newly-painted eaves, repaired the latches on both garden gates, plugged a hole in the side of the house where air-conditioning plumbing done several years ago left a hole big enough for a large bird to have built a nest inside the house, more securely attached incoming power lines to the back roof, and secured the rain chain by stringing a small steel cable through the copper funnels, securing it to the roof and to an underground pipe to discourage would-be thieves from "harvesting" the copper. The contractor also installed new carbon dioxide detectors in the upstairs hall and in the downstairs study, and checked the existing smoke detectors, finding one that was faulty and needed replacing and arranged for all the work to be inspected for adherence to city ordinances. Not only are we intending to use the same contractor for future work on our home, but we highly recommend Whitcomb Design to anyone who wants a home repair job done well, on schedule, and at a reasonable price."

Bunch Design
Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"Bo and Hisako have designed my beautiful kitchen in my current condo as well as helped me to restore my 1904 craftsmen. The first is totally modern, and the latter true to its tradition. In both cases Bunch design did excellent work, provided me with ideas and guidance that was true to my taste, and executed both projects with extreme professionalism. Furthermore, for the quality of work they gave me I found their fees to be very reasonable. Not bad! Could not recommend them more."

NS Designs
Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"Nathan and I did some work together when I was out on the west coast for some time. Working with him was awesome. He carries himself very well and is a really friendly and intelligent guy. He's very dedicated to his business and takes joy in showing people that their visions can be transformed into reality. After spending some time with him it's become quite clear that when it comes to this industry, he does it because he loves it. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to transform their home or their space."
- House of Burroughs
Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"We hired Graham Ferrier as our architect for a home renovation on a 1950s California ranch. He redesigned our kitchen and two bathrooms and he created an indoor outdoor shower at the back and a large custom steel view window on the front of the house. When we first met with Graham we wanted a remodeled kitchen with a wall removal and a renovated master bath. His vision for the kitchen and TWO new bathrooms plus the steel picture window and indoor outdoor shower was so much more than we had hoped for and he kept his renovation within our original construction budget. He truly reimagined the utilitarian spaces of our home and turned them into showpieces. The overhaul meant removing a central wall and completely redesigning the hallway and bathroom configurations. A dark tight 1950s kitchen and bathrooms were re-vamped into light-filled practical and stylish rooms. His design complemented the integrity of the house. He was respectful of its architectural value and his improvements enhanced our day to day life as well as the real estate value of our home. Our contractor - whom we hired on a friend's recommendation - was not experienced enough to handle the renovation. Graham and a member of his team stepped in (for an additional fee, obviously) and guided the contractor and his team daily toward an ambitious and beautiful end product of which the contractor was proud. Our project ran on schedule minus a few delays which came from the contractor's inexperience and some tile and counter materials which were back ordered. The only areas that went over budget were approved by us as we knowingly upgraded our desires for finishings or the scale of our renovation."

"Koffka Phakos designed our 3,400 square foot home from blueprints to finish. They were with us every step of the way. We believed them to be collaborative, creative, helpful and such nice people. We are thrilled with the way our home turned out and thoroughly enjoyed the process of working with Adrian, Cynthia and their staff."

Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"Two years ago, I hired Bill McWhorter for a drought-tolerant design in the front yard of my Cottage-style house. His design was inspired. He used the plants, one tree, and decomposed granite to create pretty welcoming shapes, winding pathways, and strategically placed spiky succulents and bougainvillea to add to the security of potential break-in points - an added bonus. The best part was the relaxed feeling that we continue to get as we walk through, brushing the plants - the salvia clevalandii and varieties of lavender release fragrance all year long, making it a complete experience. Also the drought-tolerant plants were surprising - the hot pink flowers from the Calandrinia, and the gigantic succulent blooms continue to amaze. I couldn't recommend Bill more highly - he's an artist with a master's eye. But be forewarned: a drought tolerant garden takes as much maintenance as a lawn, and a lot more knowledge. Hire Bill. You won't be disappointed."

Dutton Architects Inc.
Architects & Building Designers in Glendale, CA
"We are nearing the end of a remodel/addition for which we hired Dutton Architects. Through permitting difficulties and modification reviews they were there every step of the way. From structural issues to the smallest of details there was always an open line of communication. They were always available to answer our questions and address our concerns anytime - even for a second or third time. Construction is a trying time for any family and working with a team sympathetic to that was so helpful. People literally slow down to look at our project as they are driving by. It is so uniquely ours. So happy to have hired them."

How do I find the best Glendale, CA architect for my home design or renovation project?

When building or renovating your home, you don't simply hire an architect or building designer — you build a relationship with them. Be sure you chose a home architect who will be involved in all phases of the design process, from the initial concept to the completed construction. Architecture is an incredibly technical profession and one where getting things wrong can literally put lives at risk, so ensure you hire a professional with a valid license or an architectural firm to maintain high quality and standards. Your next consideration will be architectural style. Some residential architects specialise in designing traditional homes or farmhouses, others in designing modern replicas of traditional homes. While a few have a knack for imagining bolder, more futuristic architectural design in Glendale, CA that incorporates the latest technology.

Once you have frozen on the architect or building designer, chat through your goals, projected budget, scope of work, schedule and any other specific requirements you might have. Ask them to walk you through the process, including the number of architectural design consultations, site visits and what they will be delivering and when, e.g. feasibility study, a technical drawing, tender package and/or planning application drawings. Also, get a sense of whether they are a good listener, collaborator, and problem solver. Finally, be sure to find out what the architect needs from you, deeds, rights of way, deposit, staged payments and so on.

How much does hiring an architect in Glendale, CA cost?

Home construction and renovation often have a preset budget and hence it is important to understand how much architects charge. While there is no set payment structure, independent architects may charge differently from architectural firms. Architects sometimes choose to calculate their fees on the basis of a per square foot rate. In rare cases, especially with smaller projects, Glendale, CA architects may choose to ask their clients for a fixed fee. Make sure the total figure and payment schedule is agreed as part of your contract, particularly if you are trying to accurately estimate the cost of building a house.

Questions to ask prospective Glendale, CA architects:

  • What types of renderings (3D, video, illustrative) will you produce?
  • Who will be working on my project? (This is very important if you hire an architectural firm)
  • What is your fee structure?
  • What does the cost include?
  • Can you handle my special requests?
  • What is your experience with similar projects/ architectural design and style?
  • When do you expect to start and be finished with the project?
  • What do your services include? (It's best that the services are until construction is completed.)
  • What happens when the cost exceeds the budget?
  • Can you provide me with references?
  • Would you say your work has a defining style? (This is important in case the architect's personal style will interfere with your vision.)
  • Will you help with hiring a general contractor and other subcontractors?
  • What do you estimate the cost will be?
  • Are there any complications you foresee with this project?
  • What will I need to provide?
