Well House, Refurbishment & Extensions

With growing families homes need to be extended to create even more space. Extending by going down, creating a lower ground floor is a common solution to this perennial problem. Well House uses levels to allow views from the main living area of the home into the garden and down to the children’s play room on the lower ground floor. The central light ‘well’ is capped by an ocular window above, unifying the home and bathing it in light. The rear glazed elevation frames a small reading area for the children, giving the sensation of being in the garden even when you are inside. Concrete floors and concrete worktops are used throughout the home. Bringing an earthy feel to the interior. There are two types of material, those that get better with age and those that don’t. Cast on site and smoothed and polished, concrete can be warm and over time creates a beautiful patina. A light ‘well’ is located in the middle of Well House. Creating a tall space and allowing light into the childrens playroom. Where there could have been a dark room, there is a room that has views and is bright. It flows into the ground floor extending the living space of the home. The super thin framed sliding doors and frameless glass box to the garden dissolves the boundary between inside and outside. The inside benefits from the beautiful shadow patterns created by the mature surrounding trees.
