design: Studio TOOP, 2009 location: Utrecht, NL status: built in 2009, Vaate Tuinprojecten photo: Jolanthe Lalkens, 2010 Classic lines and symmetry with a touch of the contemporary in the materialization distinguish this design. Set behind a late 19th Century home just outside of Utrecht's city center details in the construction, such as the special cut of the mortar in the raised beds, reference the architecture of the home. The lines of the house and the French doors are respected, but at the same time bolder lines spanning the entire width of the garden are brought in to emphasize a feeling of space. A Douglas fir shed, built almost more like a cabinet or closet, follows one side of the garden till just before the patio area in the back (where you catch the last bit the evening sun in this East facing garden).
