Light, contemporary, open-plan kitchen

Rather than sell house which they had lived in for quite some time, our client decided to do a whole house refurbishment. They particularly wanted to extend the kitchen and reconfigure the whole space. This couple with two children, a dog and two cats live in a Victorian terrace house in SW London near Wimbledon. Our client was very keen to create a light, contemporary, open-plan kitchen with dining space overlooking a patio garden. The project took 3-6 months. Sloping ceiling with skylights meant that wall cabinets could not be very high so horizontal lift-up wall cabinet doors were the perfect solution in this situation. The room was wide enough for an island. Although the kitchen is very linear in appearance, we wanted to curve the island back to lead you into the dining area. This also opens up the space and creates an island seating area. The floor to ceiling flush wall of tall cabinets housing wide larder, fridge freezer and broom cupboard is broken up with horizontal lines. The proportions were determined by the appliance heights.
