HOME TO THE GIANTS

Versatility and Flexibility of Space was the primary requirement for this young nuclear family. Family dynamics in the Urban Indian setting are changing at a rapid pace. They are moving away from the home being a conservative large joint family controlled by the patriarch to being double income family of two with children. This has direct implications on the spatial organization of the home. For eg. The kitchen is no longer the hiding place for women to disappear into. The kitchen, living room and dining space is now the epicenter of family interaction – The hearth. The most important feature of the design was to do away with conventional boundaries and brick walls between the places of social interaction in the house. Space designed to flow freely using sliding walls and windows, unifying the entire house into one dynamic family space.
