Josep Fontseré, architect (Spanish, 1829-97) | Antonio Gaudí, architect (Spanish, 1852-1926)
Provenance: El Parque de la Ciutadella (Barcelona, Spain). This park was designed in 1872 by the architect, Josep Fontseré with the assistance of Antoni Gaudí, who was a student at the time. It was built on the grounds of a former garrison fort, the Ciutadella and features a zoo, a lake, museums and a large fountain. These urns act as finials on the stone balustrade walls and on the Cascada, the triumphal arch that features a waterfall and a fountain. The Cascada was a showpiece for the Barcelona Universal Exhibition of 1888. This important exhibition opened Spain to the outside world and marked the establishment of Barcelona as a modern cosmopolitan city.
