Bungalow kitchen co-design by Matthew Krier and Alan Freysinger of Design Group Three. Photography by Doug Edmonds. This 1921 craftsman bungalow home was purchased by the current owners just 2 years before they decided to undertake their kitchen project. Remaining faithful to the original design of the home was important to them. Fortunately, the kitchen had not received any significant remodeling in the previous 83 years. The vintage and worn cast iron wash basin still remained at its original location. Typical for a home of this era, the kitchen, pantry, and eating spaces were divided into a series of small rooms with many doorways leading between. The owners wanted to create a kitchen/living center that allowed them to live and interact with their children and each other, but remain faithful to the period and style of the house. Due to budget issues and not wanting to impact their already modest yard, the new kitchen was to remain within existing space. We recognized the necessity to remove walls and to open sight lines, while simultaneously allowing enough wall space for a large amount of cabinet storage and countertop work area. Given the existing masonry exterior, and as it turned out, interior as well, we wanted to work with the original locations of the windows to save money in the budget for upgrades on other selections like tops and cabinets.
