2nd place in the 20011 Local NKBA design contest other room category November 2011 Star Tribune Goal: Refurbish an entire lower level room full of 25 years of stuff and make it into a usable office, family room and retreat. The space wasn’t small and had a great stone fireplace but it felt cramped, dark and unorganized. Challenge: Make the room more functional and pleasant while blending with the 1930 era home. The room needed improved lighting and maximum storage. Lighting Solution: A new egress window was added to flood the space with daylight. Stone matching the fireplace was used for the exterior window well. Recessed lights were added to the ceiling to boost the ambient light, under-cabinet lights provide task lighting at the desk, and glass door cabinets were fitted with energy efficient LED lights.
