3. Harvested on Site
These homeowners chose this site for their new home in Maine because it made them feel connected to the woods. And homebuilder Steve Adamczyk of Steve’s Custom Homes created an even deeper connection.
Adamczyk harvested the white pine trees that were cleared to make room for the house, then milled them on site to create posts, beams and paneling for the porch. The windows have vinyl glazing that protects the porch from rain, snow, wind, pollen and dust.

Designer Sandy Kritzinger of Collaborative Interior Design provided a mom and her boys with numerous ways to enjoy an indoor-outdoor lifestyle at their home on North Carolina’s Lake Norman. The screened porch on the left contains a dining room and outdoor kitchen, the open deck in the center is for sunbathing, and the porch on the right is a TV lounge with retractable screens. New stairs and a pathway provide easy access to the lake, while the black siding helps the house blend into the surroundings when viewed from the lake.

This Minneapolis-area couple had a deck with fabulous lake views, but the intense sun and annoying bugs made the space uncomfortable to use. Tracy Hains of Che Bella Interiors designed a new porch that lets them enjoy the views in shaded and screened comfort. The angled ceiling and rustic chandelier elevate the design, while comfy woven furniture makes it a space that’s hard to leave.
