See How Terracotta Floors Overshadow These Interiors
Apart from adding warmth and elegance to the home, terracotta tiles also give the space an eye-catching quality
Terracotta was used way back in 3000-1300 BC at the time of the Indus Valley civilisation, and even far, far back in the Paleolithic age. The historical excavations at Mohenjodaro and Harappa, and more recently, the palaces and forts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, all show the use of this material for sculptures, pottery, roof shingles and even flooring.
Terracotta, which means ‘baked earth’ is made by compressing and baking unglazed clay. It has a distinct, organic, mineral quality that immediately sets it apart. Usually available in reddish brown or orange hues, today it can be superficially coloured for a different look. Although earthy in appeal, it is increasingly being used in different interior styles. Let’s look at a few examples.

Let’s look at a few examples.
1. All things red and beautiful: see how the deep-red flooring runs across the house and the staircase, filling up the home with colour and energy.
2. The earthy, textural flooring offsets the all-white kitchen, which could have otherwise looked sterile.
4. Terracotta is usually available in reddish-brown, red, pinkish-red and yellowish-orange hues. These are natural, muted, earthy colours. However, terracotta tiles can be laid in different patterns and painted over to give the floor a different look and feel, just like in this interior. These tiles add another layer to the bathroom’s design (already laden with a modern wall pattern) and ensure that in bathrooms, dark is also beautiful.

5. There’s nothing quite like the warm colour of terracotta to create a cosy, grounded feel. The honeycomb-patterned flooring finds favour in this kitchen-cum-dining space with an ash-grey counter, wooden chairs and a brick faux niche on the wall.
6. Who wouldn’t like to cook in a kitchen which has a comfortable flooring like that underfoot? I know I would. The little patterns on the floor keep it from looking too monotonous and gives the space an appealing, decorative quality.

7. Tiny spaces warrant clever ideas. Look at the terracotta tiles here that do double duty – they stop the bathroom from looking too coordinated and with their large tile size, give the illusion of more square footage.

8. An interior can benefit so much from colour. Take this corner, for example. Look at how the polychromatic terracotta tiles conjure up a lively atmosphere inside a vintage-looking space with distressed green walls and an antique-style vanity.
9. The dark-brown chairs and island with light-brown countertop and cabinets behind are all complemented by the dark terracotta flooring. Reminds me of coffee, what about you?
