Room of the Week: Cozy Living Room Makes a Style Statement
Atmosphere Interior Design designs a chic space in black, white and yellow
There's a crisp fall chill in the air, and we've been craving an afternoon in front of the fire here at Houzz. For those lucky enough to have a fireplace in these colder months, it can be tricky to let it be a focal point without dominating a space. For this project, Curtis Elmy and Trever Ciona of Atmosphere Interior Design blurred the lines of a bold black-and-white color scheme to create a room that centers around the fireplace without letting it take over.
The bottom floor of the home is a single great room, consisting of kitchen, dining room and living room. The fireplace was built to separate the dining room and help make it more intimate.
For the fireplace, the client wanted a material that wouldn't make the TV stand out. Elmy and Ciona found a gray and black polished marble with a bit of sparkle. The gray helps balance out the black-and-white and works perfectly with the TV. Pops of yellow textiles add fun.
"This room is sophisticated and contemporary, but still very child-friendly," Elmy says. "The area rug provides a great play space, and the client can watch her children in the living room while she's cooking."
