Who: Marcus Rosenthal of Kitchen Mart
Where: Sacramento, California
In his own words: “Our aim is to help homeowners breathe new life into their spaces. But more importantly, we help them fall in love with their homes again.”
It’s comforting to know that you don’t always have to start from scratch when making over your kitchen. If its layout is to your liking but some elements have lost their luster, a mini remodel might be all you need. “Without ripping everything out and starting anew, you can still change the complexion of your kitchen,” says Marcus Rosenthal, marketing director at the family-owned and -operated Kitchen Mart in Sacramento. With a few adjustments, including custom cabinet refacing and countertop replacement, the aesthetics of your kitchen can be wholly transformed. “We call it the mini kitchen remodel,” Rosenthal says. “It’s life-changing.”
With more than 27,000 ecstatic customers, Kitchen Mart has been perfecting custom refacing for over 40 years. “It’s an all-inclusive company with all in-house craftsmen to best deliver your updated look,” says Rosenthal.

Shorter timelines with all the style. For homeowners designing with longevity and value in mind, refacing versus replacing has many benefits. For starters, refacing a cabinet costs about half as much as replacing it and takes far less time, minimizing disruption to your daily routine.
Style options for refacing are just as plentiful as buying new. Hundreds of color and material choices mean you can realize your vision whether it’s country modern, art deco or something else. And if you go custom, you can add rollout shelves, tray dividers and smart storage to fit your needs to a T.

Simplify decision-making. Rosenthal, who has worked with Kitchen Mart for nearly 15 years, has always been interested in making the design experience as easy as possible. “It can be challenging for the homeowner,” he says. “There are so many ideas, inspirations, options and decisions to make.” His solution? Work with an experienced and reputable group that can handle everything: visualization, permitting, product fabrication, installation and close-out. Kitchen Mart is your one-stop shop to achieve the updated look you want without all the stress of working with individual contractors.

1. Adapt Existing Cabinetry
If your cabinets are perfectly functional but not the right look, painting and refacing can be the way to go. And you can still bring in modern must-haves, such as European hinges, soft-close drawers, tilt trays, lazy Susans, glass doors and undercabinet lighting.
For the Sacramento kitchen seen here, the Kitchen Mart team delivered a fresh look in just a few steps. Overhanging peninsula cabinets were removed, and existing cabinets were refaced in two colors. Open shelving, pendant lighting and a custom walnut hood completed the modern transformation.

2. Change Up Countertops
Rosenthal says quartz countertops are trending, thanks to their ability to complement both crisp white and brightly colored cabinets. Durable, easy to care for and available in a variety of tones, quartz countertops are a low-maintenance, high-value alternative to marble or granite.
For the country-modern kitchen in Sacramento seen here, the Kitchen Mart team fabricated and installed warm-hued quartz countertops and a corresponding backsplash. The hardwood Shaker-style cabinet doors were refaced and painted in an antique white shade to set off the sparkling copper farmhouse-style sink.

3. Fix What Frustrates
Does something in your current kitchen stick out for all the wrong reasons? Something that doesn’t work well or could be better tailored to how you use your space? To love the results at the end of any project, prioritize what matters most to you, Rosenthal says. “Trust your gut. Don’t skimp on what brings you joy,” he adds.
For the Sacramento kitchen seen here, a new custom island solved two of the homeowner’s problems at once: It provides a surface area for food prep and doubles as a dining-and-entertaining area. As for the updated style, blue painted hardwood cabinets with opaque glass doors contrast white quartz counters for a fresh look with midcentury modern roots.
