Where: Los Angeles County, California
In his own words: “Quality and customer service are my two main priorities with any project.”
Every home renovation starts with a wishlist. And the most successful remodeling projects are those that tackle as much of the wishlist as possible without breaking the bank. Aviad Goverman, the owner of general contracting firm So Cal Builders and Design, knows that prioritization from the outset is key. “Solutions are easy. Solutions within budget are a different story,” he says. “Our goal is to understand our clients’ needs then find the solutions that answer those needs as cost effectively as possible.”

Learning the ropes. Goverman began as a roofer, then worked his way up to become a foreman and then project manager. Eventually, he bought the company when the former owner retired. Learning his way around each trade gave him a deep appreciation for all parts of the construction process. “Nothing beats being out in the field, seeing things with your own eyes and doing them with your own hands,” he explains.
Attention to detail. Goverman’s experience also made it clear that each job, whether small or large, needs to be done thoroughly and well. “I love a challenge,” he says. “When I have a project with a special design or structural issues that need resolving and I can come up with a solution that nobody else has considered — that’s what I enjoy most about my work.”
He prides himself on sharing his expertise and providing consistent, high-quality service to his clients. Whether it’s a bathroom gut or a garage conversion, that high-quality service consists of the same basic elements.

Looking to remodel your home? Goverman shares the following tips for success.
1. Hire Top-Notch Professionals
Seeking out experts in their fields for specific projects, or working with a company that employs such experts, will ensure you’re getting the right person for the job. Goverman’s company keeps everything in-house and has someone on staff who can handle every aspect of a renovation. “Every one of those employees is a professional who specializes in their trade,” he says. In this way Goverman can ensure the quality of a renovation at every stage of the process.
This bathroom in Los Angeles stands out for its unique tiling. Bringing the expertly finished tile design to life required installation expertise and experienced care. Mid-sized, white porcelain and ceramic tiles within the shower complement the multicolored floor. A new cast iron bathtub, black countertop and custom built-in vanity complete the transformative look.

2. Establish Clear Communication Channels
Finding a contractor who communicates well guarantees that expectations are met. Goverman prioritizes clear, consistent communication with his clients. He also has a project manager who talks projects through in detail at the onset. “The project manager is with clients every step of the way,” he says. “The manager or someone at our office is always available to answer any questions.”
This Los Angeles-based family wanted a bathroom addition, complete with a walk-in shower, tub and sauna. Goverman’s management team helped make their vision of a serene, minimalist space a reality. His tilers installed a white ceramic tile walk-in shower and great tiled floors. His team of plumbers installed the freestanding tub and glass-and-wood sauna.

3. Be Clear About Budget and Timeline
Establishing a budget and clear time frame for the work with your builders upfront can help prevent surprises down the road. To ensure transparency, Goverman guarantees that the established budget remains the same throughout the project. “We begin with a detailed agreement which includes the price,” he says. “Unless the client changes their mind about something, that price stays the same.” Goverman also sets a clear time frame with his clients and sticks to it.
The reworking of a central island was key to improving the flow of this Los Angeles kitchen. It complicated the renovation, but Goverman’s team kept the project on time and on budget with a detailed agreement. The team also installed new appliances, quartzite counters and a gray tile backsplash. “The project manager was onsite everyday,” Goverman says. “He ensured that the project remained on budget and headed off mistakes before they could happen.”
