Focus on a blend of finishes. The paint you choose for your cabinets and walls will be the base for any kitchen style, Cox says, but that’s just the starting point. “The new thing is to add textures to this base and blend them in,” he says. Cox recommends using two to three textures, such as wood, metal and glass, to give your kitchen a timeless look.
Add an element of surprise. Mix in an unexpected element or two for a modern touch, such as an industrial faucet in a traditional kitchen or a new take on a range hood. One popular option that works with almost any style is a farmhouse sink, Cox says, especially one that’s unusual. “Look for them in finishes such as cement or stainless steel or in shapes that are rounded,” he says.

1. Take a Fresh Look at Wood
Choose a wood with a bold grain, such as maple, for your island or cabinets. The stained maple used in this Naples kitchen “is a mixture of gray and brown that isn’t overpowering and allows the grain to show through,” Cox says.
The wood’s strongly defined lines help take the 20-year-old kitchen to the forefront of contemporary design. They echo the cabinets’ sleek, crisp aesthetic. The herringbone pattern of the backsplash adds contrast and movement, keeping the space from seeming sterile.

2. Mix Your Metals
Use a mix of metal elements throughout your kitchen. It could be something as noteworthy as a matte black range or hood with copper accents paired with a stainless-steel toe kick. “The metals will help direct your eye through the room,” Cox says.
A stainless steel range and matching hood create an eye-catching focal point in this kitchen in Naples’ Quail West neighborhood. Angular matte-black pendant lights bring drama. Shaker-style cabinets and classic subway tile offset these more modern elements. A quartz countertop with strong gray colorations ties the look together.

3. Rethink Your Backsplash
Play with large-format tile, herringbone patterns or soft curves — and consider a full-tile feature wall. A backsplash of sea glass, mother of pearl and stone in an arabesque pattern makes a statement in this kitchen, also in Naples. “The pattern catches the eye,” Cox says.
The gray-and-white pattern picks up the white of the countertops and cabinets as well as the blue-gray color of the island’s base and matching stools. Strategically placed glass cabinet fronts subtly echo the glass in the backsplash.
