New Decor Creates a Sophisticated and Comfortable Family Room

Before: The family room previously had furniture that had seen better days, and Aquadro replaced all of it. The window blinds are the only existing element of the room to remain after the decorating project.

After: This closer look at the second sofa shows how the animal print gives the toss pillow arrangement a little zip. The wall art came from a local gallery. Square sconces echo the straight lines of the sofas and fit the room’s transitional decor style.

Aquadro brought in the items displayed on the coffee table — as well as other styling touches throughout the room, such as the elephant figurine near the armchair and the fiddle leaf fig to the right of the sofa — for the photo shoot. Her clients chose to keep about 90 percent of the items. Styling and accessorizing is one of the services Aquadro offers as part of her design business.

The area rug is 100 percent wool, a textile Aquadro likes for its durability. The armchair is a custom piece.

Family Room at a Glance
Who lives here: A family of five
Location: Winchester, Massachusetts
Size: About 300 square feet (28 square meters)
Designer: Alexandra Aquadro of AGA Design
Sometimes all that’s needed to make a space feel new is some strategic decorating. In this room, a designer used fresh paint, new furniture, rugs and window treatments to transform the space into a welcoming oasis for family and friends. “We designed it so that it was sophisticated and refined enough that it could be seen as an additional living room,” designer Alexandra Aquadro says, and yet still be “a great place to gather at the end of the day and watch a movie.”
The palette for most of the home is greens and yellows, but the client wanted this room to be primarily neutral “but still have some life to it,” Aquadro says. “That’s why we brought in those blues — very calm blues.”
The homeowners wanted two big sofas and an accent chair so there would be multiple comfortable places to sit. Aquadro selected a blue damask pattern for the drapes and used the same fabric for toss pillows on each sofa.
The television (not pictured) is on a console table across from the sofa against the window.
