My Houzz: Traditional Texas Home Gets Modern Revamp
Gutting the kitchen and master bath, an Austin couple gives a home they built themselves a contemporary facelift
High ceilings, large windows, an open living space and impeccable modern furniture helped give this Austin, Texas, home the modern facelift its owners wanted. Although Laurel and Hal Schroeder custom built their home 12 years ago, Laurel wanted to take the traditional family home in a new direction. The couple decided to completely renovate their house, gutting the kitchen and the master bathroom and installing new hardwood flooring and trim throughout. They worked closely with Vicki Mayabb Interiors to materialize their modern vision.

The occasional chairs with the leather strap backs, from Scott+Crooner, are comfortable crowd pleasers in the living room. Customizable art pieces hang opposite the fireplace: Hal and Laurel can change up the placement and order of each colorful hand-painted acrylic square in the grid, keeping the art arrangement fresh and unique.
"I love to cook and have spent a lot of time in this room," Laurel says. "I have great memories of cooking with my girls and making breakfast for their friends after sleepovers."
Laurel entertains guests and members from various book and Bunco clubs that she's a part of. "The party is going to start here in the kitchen," she says.
The raised shower in the master bathroom existed when the home was first built, but the couple installed all new travertine flooring, maple cabinetry and tiling on the bathtub to modernize the space.

"My solution to clutter is to simply hide it," Laurel says of her tidy new space. "I'd rather be doing anything than cleaning."
