Light Automation Trends to Watch Out For in 2022
Lightbook founder Vinayak Diwan talks about lighting design and what the year has in store
Automation paves the way towards connected living, and Indian homes are finally warming up to the idea of illuminating their abodes with a little help from this new friend. Light automation uses artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT) ecosystem integrated with appliances and devices to simplify daily routines. We’ve identified cutting-edge technologies and trends that we believe capture the gist of what’s to come and how you can integrate the same in your homes.

“Automated presets in lighting prove sustainable in the long run with their ease of use. Plug and play illumination systems are expected to grow in popularity as you can integrate them with existing technologies in your home,” says Diwan. “In spaces like corridors and bathrooms, occupancy sensors reduce the risk of accidents as lights switch on automatically – especially when you wake up in the middle of the night.”

b. Li-Fi
Like Wi-Fi, Light fidelity, (Li-Fi) is a mobile wireless technology. However, Li-Fi uses light instead of radio frequencies to transfer data, resulting in better energy efficiency and cost reductions.
“Making use of LED lights for communication, it doubles as regular lighting and is often more effective for higher speed wireless illumination and networking,” Diwan says.

c. Integrating multiple automation systems
With a fully integrated system, homeowners get efficiency, enhanced life safety and security, and with lighting controls, energy savings. Integration of ideas and concepts in lighting layouts, product specifications, lighting control systems and so on helps set up a cohesive ambience.
“The integrated lighting control system interface makes operations easy. For example, when you open your biometric door locks, lights turn on automatically,” Diwan says.

d. Human-centric lighting
Indicative of the name, this technology is designed keeping the human internal biological clock, called the circadian rhythm, in mind.
“Human-centric lighting mimics natural daylight, which is a key factor in driving our bodily functions. These automated luminaires can enhance performance, health, comfort and well-being to craft productive spaces,” says Diwan.

Indian homes and light automation
“Tech-savvy Indians, especially millennials, are opting for automation in their homes. The home automation industry has seen patterns of change due to a shift in the consumer paradigm and the Indian market is catching up fast,” Diwan says.
The possibilities for smart functionality in homes are practically endless. Light automation simplifies technology with the click of a button. Also, with easy-to-install upgrades, a wider choice of products and post-installation assistance add to the experience.

Automation and affordability
“Lighting automation will be more affordable in the future as people realise the imminent need for it. Automation products are widely available and are provided by varied companies. As a result, clients are better informed and mindfully invest capital and time in making correct lighting choices,” Diwan says.

Lighting is considered a focal point in the design of a home. By installing statement fixtures in the home, “one can emulate art,” concludes Diwan.

According to Diwan, these are the light automation trends to watch out for in the coming year:
a. Occupancy sensors
“Homeowners and commercial spaces are becoming increasingly aware of the cost savings and reduced energy consumption benefits of lighting control technology,” says Diwan. “Occupancy sensors offer an effective solution where there is constant traffic, as well as timed switches based on elapsed time or programmed according to specific schedules, dimming controls, or a combination of these options.”
