Know Your Design Concepts: Contemporary vs Modern
Although used interchangeably, there is a difference between these two design concepts. Here's how to tell
There is a common confusion between ‘Contemporary’ and ‘Modern’ interiors, especially among those who are not as design-savvy or trained. As design professionals, it’s our responsibility to know and help you understand which style suits your personality, lifestyle and home best.
The term ‘Modern’ is rather deceiving and one can be easily confused. ‘Contemporary’ is a general term to include anything current that does not reference any historical period.
One often hears of ‘mid-century modern’ and in Singapore, the term ‘retro’ is often bandied about. These both refer to Modern furniture and design from the 1920s to 1950s.
Modern design is recognisable by its clean, unadorned style, use of natural materials such as wood and leather. Moulded plywood, plastic, as well as polished metal were also commonly used.

These days the term ‘Modern’ can also refer to interior and furniture with clean lines. Most Italian leather sofas produced today are modern contemporary furniture. This style could be constituted as Contemporary Modern style.
‘Contemporary’ design on the other hand, is ever evolving and is not tied down to one specific style. It is often quite eclectic. Comfort and sustainability are key considerations for any space, and are important in a contemporary home.
We design with a rather distinct classic contemporary style which is distinguished by the use of black and white with a dash of the client’s favourite colour.
For example, this client wanted an ‘Asian contemporary’ space and we were inspired by her travels to Bali. She loved the bright colours typical of Balinese design and yet wanted a subtle space to call her own.
We recommend this style in a tropical country like Singapore. Asian accent pieces are readily available here and can be used cleverly in your home. This is a chance to be proud of your heritage.

At the end of the day, your home and space reflect who you are. Whatever style of decor and interior you choose, it ought to make you comfortable and relaxed. Remember that it’s your home and there are no rules … but you have to live with it.
