Great Color Combination: A Green and Black Palette
For a fresh, crisp look from the living room to the laundry room, take a cue from nature
We have had some rainy days in the past few weeks in Los Angeles. In my hometown of Pasadena, there are many tree-lined streets of magnificent camphor trees. I'm always reminded of how much I like green and black together while driving down one of these streets after a good rain. Camphor trees, especially in early spring, have a bright chartreuse leaf and produce clusters of tiny, black berrylike fruit. With rain, the trunks of these trees darken by the saturation of water and appear black. They are truly a sight to behold, and the sharp contrast of the chartreuse leaf against the black bark always gets me thinking of ways to bring this palette indoors.
Did you ever wonder what is so eye catching about the Houzz logo? Yep, it's green and black. These colors just look good together. Take a look at how these Houzz designers have translated these two colors into fresh designs for spring.

What a perfect color combination for this laundry room. I wouldn't mind folding in this fresh space. The beautiful shade of green on the walls is sharply contrasted by the black geometric pattern on the floor. Also, note the simple and effective use of black with a liner on the backsplash.
Here the designer selected a monochromatic palette of various spa greens and threw in touches of black in side tables and lampshades. Notice the great black and white trim that was selected for the leading edge of the curtain. Small detail, big impact.
This transitional space makes great use not only of green and black but of great textural details as well. The textures of the wall of stone, the chandelier and the green table accessories all combine to make a clean and sleek look.
Dazzle with a rug. This green striped rug punctuates the botanical pattern in the curtain, while the black furniture and frames anchor the room. Notice how the chartreuse in the rug is picked up again in the bedding and how the black bed sets them both off.
Green in a kitchen is such a great backdrop for cooking and serving meals; it feels fresh and clean. The black lampshades in this chandelier create drama and sophistication against the green walls of this kitchen.
One of my favorite shades of green, primary green, is strong and modern against black furniture. I think the use of the vine lamp provides the one element that tips this design in a "soft modern" direction. A very clever choice, this lamp makes the space more approachable and relaxed.
Green and black are also great choices for a bathroom — such a clean feeling. Try a spring-inspired green on your bathroom walls, then add black details in flooring, hardware and linens.
What a great eclectic vibe in this bedroom. All the pieces make you stop and wonder. The palette couldn’t be more simple, but black and white feels fresh and organic with the addition of greenery from the lush ferns and branches. Natural elements such as plants and trees are an easy addition to a black and green palette.
